FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 10, 2012

June 10th, 2012

Well, the dust has settled on our community's very first BarterTime Second Saturday gathering.

Event Coordinator, Mike Tummillo, speaks
with Traders at the first BarterTime
Second Saturday event June 9th.

Mike Tummillo, Event Coordinator, said, "I am VERY encouraged by the reaction of those who attended today's event. I believe everyone there was either encouraged to have been with like-minded people, or enlightened by the amount of stimulating information people were sharing today. Personally, I was impressed by some of the things people brought to barter with... whether it was chewing tobacco, bottled water from a well, canned goods, even wasp spray for self-defense use... we couldn't have asked for a more beautiful morning at Wits End Small Event Center under all those shady trees."

Tummillo said, "We learned a few things from today's event, too... a few things we'll adjust for the next gathering. I was encouraged by several in attendance to keep doing this."

Scott Roebuck, who operates Heavenly Branch Farm in Dublin with his wife, Tara, had this to say, "It's a wonderful concept... we are looking forward to long term participation as it grows. We will definitely help spread the word."

Tara added, "Something like this is long overdue in our area. We thoroughly enjoyed the people we met today and had great conversations about progressive ideas for our community. Personally, I am excited to watch it grow into it's full potential."

As a result of promotional eMail and "hits" received at the BarterTime Blog, Tummillo said he has heard from several people who expressed interest in having a similar event in their own communities. "BarterTime is for anyone, anywhere. Even Homeland Security is encouraging Americans to start connecting with a wider circle of like-minded folks so there's a network you can turn to and work with should some sort of disaster or disruption take place. The major upside to the growing interest in "Prepping" is that - because disasters are on the increase - it's easier to find stable, rational people who are taking steps to prepare for real possibilities. The wild-eyed, religious Doomsdayer is still out there, but there's definitely a growing number of sober-minded families who are pro-actively doing something to prepare for the worst, even while hoping for the best."

Next month's BarterTime Second Saturday will begin at 9AM July 14th, once again, at Wits End Small Event Center. Attendees are welcome to bring as many bartering items as they like as well as their own table and chairs. No money changes hands at this event and there is no vending, water, or electricity.

Preparing for the worst.

Preparation is critical. My wife and I recently sat down with our bug-out bags - all three of them (one for each car, one for the house) - checking expiration dates and making a list to see if we were lacking anything from one bag to the next.

Now, some of you may think we're nuts. Gone off the proverbial "deep end." I know, I know.

We prefer calling it being PREPARED, as much as we feel we need to be at this time. No, we aren't feeling the need for a bunker. Not yet. We aren't so sure we even want to live in a world where things have that gone "Mad Max." We began about two years ago, purposely buying ten extra cans of soup when we shopped. Though we forgot to buy them more often than we remembered, in time, we had a new Sam's card and bulked up on a few things. We did our due diligence, read some books, watched some videos, watched a few episodes of Man vs Wild. Do what you CAN do, NOT what you can't do!

Sure, we can all hope for the best, but something that's lacking with many Preppers is they can't REALLY imagine anything really awful happening, especially not to THEM. We're praying AGAINST the storms of life ourselves! Too many of those who DO prepare for the "Stuff Hits The Fan (SHTF)" variety of disasters cannot find within themselves to even discuss a disaster with their families and friends and what to do if one should take place. This denial leads to a failure of preparing beyond even a couple of days or so. Deep down, they're still convinced the government, or some other safety net, will come through for them when their preparations run out.

Tell that to the Katrina victims.

PLEASE FORWARD this information to your Friends and Loved Ones. Someone you know will greatly appreciate this information.

Blessings,
Michael Tummillo

Are we building a Resilient Community?
Every community - and EVERY family and Business within that community - possesses three primary ways of "staying afloat" when the Stuff Hits The Fan:
  • Food abundance.
  • Heat, fuel, and power abundance.
  • Water abundance.
Homes and communities who maximize these sources are much more resilient than those who don’t.  They can bounce back from nearly any disruption without skipping a beat. When FEMA suggest everyone be prepared for at least three days, more and more are getting prepared for a much longer run.
Why are MOST Communities in Danger?

As any airplane pilot will attest, the most dangerous aspect of flying a plane is take-off. Our society is currently engaged in the equivalent of a plane’s very dangerous take-off phase on our journey toward becoming resilient communities.  Why are we in danger?  Because most communities and individuals don’t have enough energy to soar above, or recover from, a failure.

Most communities, even those working hard at becoming resilient, don’t produce much “energy” at the local level yet.  This means even small disruptions might become catastrophic, let alone big ones that turn supermarkets into food deserts (a supermarket only carries enough food to provide its customers with three days of supply). A water main break in an upscale Boston suburb resulted in total chaos and panic as citizens stormed the grocers and National Guard ran out of bottled water as cars lined-up to get their share.

Fortunately, change is coming.

I see glimmers of hope every day. We’re learning how to become producers again and we’re getting better at it all the time. Bartering is one way to get the things we need most, enabling us to utilize our paper cash as an exchange for REAL wealth in the form of gold, silver, grain and healthier world currencies (FOREX).

BarterTime Second Saturday is another way to acquire things we need without tapping into our finances. The event takes place June 9th from 9AM till noon, Wits End Small Event Center, 8 miles south of downtown Stephenville off Hwy 281 and FM 913. Trade your stuff. Get to know your neighbors. Eliminate things you no longer need and get some things you might be able to use. Admission: One bartering item per adult. The first 30 traders will have access to a marked bartering area.
